Submerse - 2ru Groove (+remixes) (L2S Recordings)

Out of what is quickly becoming one of my favorite labels comes the magnificent "2ru Groove" from upcoming producer Submerse, including several top notch remixes by the likes of Whistla, Duncan Powell and M2J. With their tenth release, Whistla's L2S Recordings pushes the bar one level higher and blurs the line between dubstep, garage, and plain old school house.

The clean cut and beautifully produced original by Submerse features a deep four to the floor groove layered with a classic 2step garage break, echoing old school house and garage vibes. What starts off as a lounge influenced garage tune takes a whole new dimension as the overwhelmingly deep bass kicks in; Submerse manages to present a perfect marriage between deep chilled out vibes and killer bass. "2Ru" is definitely one for the dancefloors and presents exciting crossover potential for garage and dubstep.

Sub FM and L2S Recordings founding father Whistla offers two remixes of the title track encompassing a wide spectrum of sounds. "Whistla's Earth Crisis Mix" first and foremost features his signature vocal touch - pitch distorted vocal snippets awkwardly arranged on a chopped garage beat for ultimate pleasure. It's hard to explain what makes Whistla's work so interesting; his previous EP on L2S (The "420 Lockdown" EP) offers a similar risky mashup of beats and sounds to create an overall incredibly groovy collection of tunes.
His other remix on the release, "Whistla's Earth Crashes Mix", doesn't offer much of a variation While one can appreciate his different, more stripped down approach, it still appears to me that the duality present in this release might have been unnecessary; Whistla offers a rather similar remix with slightly different vocal snippets and effects. However, I stick by my original point; Whistla is a producer to watch out for, being one of the few to truly offer experimental rhythms and sounds in the 7o BPM range.

Hold tight, this one isn't nearly over yet. The third remix on the release is once again no less than stunning; Duncan Powell offers a completely different approach to the original with broken hip hop sounds; percussion, pads, synths, it's all there and the end product is no less than incredible. Somewhere between hip hop, grime, and dubstep sits this A-class production reminding one of Kode 9's legendary Dubstep Allstars installment. This one is definitely not to be missed.

Finally, L2s wonder kid M2J presents a more convential dubstep remix, guaranteed to make the clubs shake. The blend of atmospherics, the stripped double time beat, and the heavy bass creates a true banger - M2j's remix presents a less obvious formula while staying dancefloor oriented.
